Housing affordability continues to be one of North Queensland’s most significant challenges, with increasing pressure on families, essential workers and vulnerable members of the community trying to secure stable housing. The Townsville Affordable Living Precinct has been developed as a direct response to that need.
Supported by approximately $40 million in financing from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), the project will deliver 81 new social and affordable housing units in Townsville through Hurst Cubed. The development will include: • 21 social housing units • 60 affordable housing units • A mix of one, two and three bedroom configurations • Capacity to accommodate up to 240 residents The announcement follows more than 18 months of planning, coordination and problem solving to help bring the project to this stage. While projects of this scale and complexity are never straightforward, the process has reinforced the importance of collaboration, persistence and finding practical solutions to deliver outcomes that respond to real community need. For the families who will live here, this project represents far more than additional housing supply. Stable and affordable housing plays a direct role in improving access to employment, education, health outcomes and long term connection to community. As a North Queensland based company, Hurst sees the region’s housing pressures firsthand. The project reflects a commitment to delivering practical, long term solutions while continuing to invest in the future growth of Townsville and the wider region. The project will also include an Indigenous Engagement Strategy developed in partnership with Traditional Owners, helping ensure the development delivers broader social and community value alongside new housing outcomes. While Hurst Constructions QLD has an established history delivering complex commercial, industrial and community infrastructure projects across the region, the Townsville Affordable Living Precinct also reflects the continued growth of Hurst Holding Company’s development capability and long term investment in North Queensland.
